Rwandan coffee has returned to its excellent quality thanks to the drive of local growers and developmental assistance from Europe and the USA.
Rwandan Gikomero coffee is beautifully uplifting with soft vanilla, rich cherry and plum with hints of orange zest.
Perfect for a Sunday morning.
Gikomero washing station has been owned and operated by Rwanda Trading Co. since 2013. Since inception 1,816 farmers have been registered into their Agronomy Training Program at Gikomero station. This is an intense 2 year training program focused on increasing yields and quality, along with improving record keeping practices at farm level. The quality increase really showed this year with an average of 3 SCAA points higher cup scores across all deliveries received from the station, and the first 85+ lot ever, which was purchased by Falcon Specialty. Average yield for the 1,816 farmers in the program is also way up - a 155% increase since 2014. Producers who supply cherry to Gikomero grow their coffee at between 1450 and 1650 masl.
Gikomero processed 327 tons of cherry during the 2016 season. Cherries are pulped using a Pinhalense pulper, dry fermented for 12 hours, wet soaked for 8 hours and density graded with water channels, before being dried on raised beds for approximately 14 days.
